Our Staff
Sue Van Marte
I started doing kennel work in high school. Then in 1988 Dr.Terry Durkes trained me as his technician. I also have worked with the DNR to rehabilitate wild animals.
Dr. Durkes has shown me the proper way to care for wild life and it has been rewarding to see them released back into the wild.
I am married with two children.
I love working with animals to make sure they get the best care possible. Working at Western Avenue Animal Hospital has been very rewarding for me.
I am also a 4-H leader with Wranglers Horse and Pony Club and Liberty – Green 4-H. Club. It is all about loving to work with the animals.

I have been working for Dr. Durkes since May 2006. I enjoy coming in contact with the animals and their owners. The staff is great to work with and even Dr. Durkes is a fine and caring boss.
Before coming to Western Avenue Animal Hospital, my husband and I owned The Super Scoop Restaurant in Marion. We owned it for about 9 1/2 years and closed due to my husband’s illness. It was quite a business learning experience for me as I had never worked other than as a secretary and with children.
Previous to The Super Scoop, I was secretary for a local daycare for about two years and before that I was a preschool teacher at the same daycare.
While living in Texas I worked as a Civil Service Secretary for about two years before getting married and moving to Marion.
